God created people to be in community with him and each other, and he is redeeming people through Jesus Christ toward that end. The local church is a Holy Community, a gathering of all different types of people who are set apart by God and for God. Since Intown is not exactly a parish church, we must be very intentional about creating opportunities for fellowship. Outside of Sunday Worship, Home Groups are the best way for us to engage with one another as Christians. They are also a place, we hope, where “outsiders” (neighbors, friends, or family who don’t attend our church) feel welcome.
Each Home Group is led by a member of Intown. Usually there is time for fellowship, prayer, and discussion of some sort based on the Bible or another book during regular meetings—this fall we will study John Piper’s book, Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ. If someone hits hard times, has a new baby, or experiences other major life changes, the Home Group is a great place for support, shepherding, and prayer. Oftentimes, important information about Intown will be disseminated through the Home Group leaders. And we try to engage our Home Groups in ministries of mercy around the city on a regular basis, to live out the Gospel together. We generally take breaks during the summer months, and around Christmastime.
You can attend a Home Group based on geographical proximity, or trek across town to spend time with friends. Either way, we strongly encourage all regular attendees—especially members—to join a Home Group, as these are the places where we will experience the closest community.
